Rain Drop – Soft99's express spray coating and wonder child
The Japanese express spray coating from Soft99 called Rain Drop, made its debut in 2019. Since then, this user-friendly product has become a real hit, selling not only in Europe but also in the Land of the Rising Sun, with 250,000 units sold in Japan within the first year of its release! What should you know about this product?
Rain Drop – where did the idea for the express coating come from?
Only the most dedicated fans of the Soft99 brand will know that Rain Drop is a product family with a true history! Initially, characteristic of Soft99, there was a wax. We know little about the Rain Drop in wax form, apart from the fact that it was a product from the 90s, focused on providing the best possible hydrophobicity. Many features of the old wax were inherited by the Rain Drop spray we know today.
The appearance of a product like Rain Drop should not be surprising. This product debuted on March 1, 2019, as a response to the expectations of car care enthusiasts, among whom the modern concept of "spray coatings" was becoming increasingly popular. These coatings combine the ease of application of a quick detailer with the protective strength known from various types of coatings. Competitive products were simultaneously vying with Rain Drop for market supremacy, but among products that look similar at first glance, only Rain Drop can boast a "five-in-one" properties. With one push of the trigger, Rain Drop gives shine and protects the paint, windows, plastics, chrome, and wheels. The result? Like after a good waxing! The effect is truly impressive!
Another important aspect of Rain Drop is its ease of use. There was a very good reason as to why the Japanese marketing department of Soft99 presented Rain Drop in a video where a Toyota, protected by it, enters an automatic car wash with rotating brushes five times, still maintaining the same shine and hydrophobic properties after each exit. Visits to the so-called "brushes" may be sacrilegious in the world of detailing, but in this way, we emphasized what matters most: that Rain Drop is a product for everyone, whether they go to an automatic car wash or hand wash their carefully coated car.
How does Rain Drop work?
The biggest trademark of Rain Drop is the RAS Shield, a term used to describe the technology used in this product. What does the enigmatic acronym RAS hide? It's the English words Repellency, Adsorption, and Smoothness. Attention is especially drawn to adsorption, a phenomenon in which substances dissolved in a liquid or present in a gas accumulate on the surface of a solid or liquid. This aspect underlines the fact that Rain Drop should be applied only on a wet car. Water acts as an activator for the other effects of Rain Drop, such as repelling water or dirt, as well as smoothness and shine. By the way, this product is an excellent vehicle drying aid, which will work great as a rinse-aid type solution!
Rain Drop was created to help the biggest possible group of people in taking care of their vehicles, hence its formula as a true "five-in-one." Rain Drop will work on the paint as a standalone protection for up to 3 months, but it is also an excellent boost for waxes or even coatings. On windows, the water and dirt repellency effect will last for up to 2 months. Additionally, Rain Drop will effectively protect plastics such as bumpers, as well as similar elements, but coated in chrome. An additional advantage of Rain Drop is its excellent compatibility with rims. As the product adds slipperiness to surfaces, we recommend applying Rain Drop to a microfiber cloth and then spreading it on the rims later to avoid spraying the agent onto brake components.
Rain Drop's siblings from Japan
In Japan, the Rain Drop product family is even more extensive! Rain Drop Dry Wipes and Rain Drop Tornado Vortex had their Japanese premiere in the fall of 2023. Let's take a look!
Rain Drop Dry Wipes
Rain Drop Dry Wipes are 20 large, disposable wipes saturated with liquid Rain Drop, allowing us to locally enhance the product's effect or quickly "wipe & shine" the car after washing it at a touchless car wash. The Japanese love car wipes for their simplicity and ease of use, and this case is no different.
Rain Drop Tornado Vortex
Rain Drop Tornado Vortex, on the other hand, is Rain Drop with a rotating nozzle, creating stylish circles on the car's surface. The strong spray is applied not only more spectacularly but also more efficiently, allowing large vehicle parts to be quickly coated with the beautifying and depth-giving Rain Drop. The durability of the product has also been increased: up to 5 months on the paint and up to 3 on glass.
